Sarah was still grumbling as they came along the corridor to the communications room.  'All right, so you need some kind of alarm system at the refinery.  Does it have to be something that drives people out of their minds?'

'You've got to remember we're strangers on this planet,' said Eckersley patiently.  'And we're not too popular.  We've got to protect ourselves.'

'Most of the Peladonians are still close to barbarism,' said Alpha Centauri.  'They have a great distrust of progress.'

Sarah stopped and turned to face him.  'Maybe that's because they're not getting anything out of it.  You've got to convince them progress will give them a better life.'

'It's no good, Sarah,' said Eckersley.  'Force is all they understand.'

As if to give emphasis to his words, Ettis sprang around out from his hiding place behind an arras, and struck Eckersley down with the hilt of his sword.

Eckersley groaned and fell, and Ettis menaced Alpha Centauri with his sword blade.

'Help, help, we are being attacked,' shrieked the Ambassador.

'Silence, alien.  Into the communications room, both of you.'  Leaving Eckersley where he had fallen, Ettis herded Alpha Centauri and Sarah through the doorway.

Once they were inside, Ettis said threateningly, 'Do as you are told and you won't be harmed.  I want you to open the Federation armoury door.'

'That is out of the question,' said Alpha Centauri primly.  'Natives of primitive planets are forbidden access to sophisticated weapons.'

Ettis held his sword to Sarah's throat.  'Open that door!'

'Only Eckersley knows how to operate the controls, and you have rendered him unconscious.  I cannot do as you ask.'

'I advise you to try - if you wish to save the life of your fellow alien.'  Again the sword menaced Sarah.

Reluctantly Alpha Centauri moved to the control panel.

Fact and Findings
Classic chapter title - The Wrath of Aggedor

This story is a sequel to Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon and was finally succeeded itself by the 1994 New Adventure spin-off novel Legacy by Gary Russell.

First edition cover price - 85p

Classic chapter title: well of the 12, nothing really fancy, but perhaps something with an Aggedor in it... Aggedor Strikes Again, The Wrath of Aggedor, The Return of Aggedor, or Aggedor's Sacrifice

Originally published by W. H. Allen, ISBN 0 426 20132 9. An undated reissue was printed a couple of years later with a cover price of £1.25. Reprinted again in 1984 and the pages from this reissue were re-covered (same artwork, different target logo) in the late 1980's. The title was abbreviated to Doctor Who - The Monster of Peladon in June 1992 when the novel was reprinted by Virgin with a brand new cover. The ISBN was retained but the cover price had gone up to £2.99.

A hardback edition was also released in December 1980.

From 1983 the book was numbered 43 in the Doctor Who library.

A chunk of the beginning of the book appeared in a 1983 science fiction anthology, Beyond the Stars, published by Marks and Spencer (ISBN 0 86273 094 5). The story runs up to where Gebek first pleas with Queen Thalira to send home the alien delegates. The story is accompanied by four original illustrations by Peter Dennis, depicting the Doctor, Sarah and Alpha Centauri like you've never seen them before! Also in the book is a sequence from Star Wars with some unique pictures. The hardback was reprinted in 1984, however it was withdrawn due to copyright problems.
Cover Data
Alister Pearson's cover artwork for the 1992 reprint was released as a postcard, free with 'Doctor Who Magazine', in the mid-1990's. Donald Gee as the treacherous Eckersley features, alongside Lis Sladen and Jon Pertwee, with Alpha Centauri, Azaxyr and The Statue of Aggedor.

Peter Dennis used the movie poster for Battlestar Galactica (which isn't featured within) as inspiration for his cover for Beyond the Stars.
Reviews
"On the whole, a good book. For those tired of the endless and mostly boring books about Baker (and who isn't?) it is really a godsend.
And it would currently seem that there will only be three books by Terrance Dicks in 1981 - and with books by Ian Marter and David Fisher confirmed - 1981 should be a good year. Surely with fewer books, five in all, they can get better..."
- Richard Down, 'Shada' (number 4), 1981

  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.
  • This is currently unfinished, but a work in progress...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
